Propane cylinders are designed to take up very little space and can be kept in an outdoor facility or inside the storage area. It does take some time to switch out a propane cylinder, though, it still does requires operator training in order to be performed safely and also require knowledge of safety standards like for example the OSHA or Occupational Health and Safety Administration.
Compared to the electric truck, internal combustion lift trucks are faster and easier to refuel. Nevertheless, the IC engine does create polluting emissions and are extremely noisy.
NARROW-AISLE FORKLIFTS
The ITA's Class 2 trucks include a large variety of electric forklifts and these are specially designed to be used in narrow aisles. The standard storage aisles are 12 feet wide, and this easily allows a counterbalanced forklift to turn in the aisle and put a load away. Normally, narrow aisles are 8 feet wide, while the very narrow aisles are roughly 5.5 to 6 feet wide. These narrow aisles require specialized forklifts that are capable of putting away cargo which are small enough to turn on a tight radius or without any turning at all.
The three most common narrow aisle forklifts are the order pickers, reach trucks and turret trucks. The differences among these lift trucks are discussed below.
Narrow-Aisle Reach Forklifts
The conventional reach truck is the original narrow-aisle forklift and these equipment do not require a counterweight. They are also small enough to turn around in narrow aisles. Instead, stability is provided by the outrigger arms that extend in front of the trucks. Nevertheless, depending on the storage configuration, these outrigger arms can prevent the trucks from getting near enough to the storage rack to deposit and retrieve cargo. To be able to overcome this situation, a pantograph was designed. The pantograph is actually a reach truck which is designed with a telescoping mechanism. This allows forks to reach into storage areas concisely and easily.
The best environment for narrow aisle lift trucks is a place which has good lighting, clean floors and good traffic flow, well-maintained floor, along with ample turning space.
